My name is Jocelynn Alexandria Benavides, and I am proud to call Katy, Texas, my home. I was born and raised in “Old Katy”, a place celebrated state-wide for its deep-rooted love of sports. It’s here that I formed lifelong friendships and discovered my passion for soccer. Soccer has been an important part of my life since I was seven years old. Before finding my love for the game, I explored tumbling and cheerleading in search of what truly brought me joy. One morning, I decided to tell my parents I wanted to play soccer. A decision that marked the beginning of an incredible journey on the field. Since then, soccer has not only been my passion but also a cornerstone of the person I’ve become.
During my sophomore year, I faced one of the most challenging moments in my soccer journey. My coach gave me almost no playing time, and the bench quickly became all too familiar. This was especially discouraging because I had previously been an active starting player. Week after week, I watched underclassman take the field while I stayed on the sidelines. I tried discussing this with my coach, but the feedback was far from encouraging. I began to question whether my efforts were worth it and even considered walking away from the sport I loved so much. However, deep down, I knew I couldn’t give up on soccer- it meant too much to me. I decided to turn this setback into motivation. I poured my energy into improving, dedication countless hours after practice to working out, running, and honing my soccer skills. I was determined to earn my place back on the field. Through this experience, I learned an invaluable lesson: to keep pushing forward and never give up, no matter how tough things get. Eventually, my coach acknowledged my extra effort and while I didn’t start, I earned playing time again. That moment reaffirmed my love for soccer and taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience. I cheered my team on from the sidelines to the very last game of that season.
Last year, I faced one of the toughest challenges of my life when I experienced three consecutive concussions. This kept me off the soccer field almost all season long. The contestant pain and inability to fully recover took a significant toll on me, both physically and mentally. Balancing schoolwork with my recovery was incredibly difficult, and being unable to work out only added to the struggle. Falling behind in fitness and the uphill battle to regain my strength felt overwhelming at times. I was very blessed to be surrounded by my supportive teammates and my loving family who kept me going during these trying times and during my physical therapy sessions. They helped me stay calm when the frustration would pile up. I was reminded that I am strong and that my cleats were waiting for me to conquer this mountain. Coming back from three concussions was one of the most difficult experiences I’ve ever endured. I am thankful that I was able to lean into those close to me during this difficult time. After some time, I was able to play the end of season games and regain my happy place on the field.

One meaningful piece of advice that a teacher once gave me is that I can do anything I set my mind to. This advice resonates deeply with me because of the struggles I faced in elementary school. Reading was a significant challenge for me, and it took about three years before I was finally tested and diagnosed with dyslexia. That same year, I had one of the best teachers. She became my advocate, ensuring I received the extra help I needed in classes and, more importantly, helping me feel proud of my efforts instead of ashamed. She instilled in me a confidence that I never had before. She constantly reminded me I was capable of overcoming any obstacle as long as I stayed focused and determined. Even till this day, I use her words to push through difficulties and achieve my goals.

There are many times I wanted to quit and hang up my cleats for good. Between the self-doubt and the challenging moments of high school soccer, I came close to walking away and almost allowed these struggles to take away my love for the game. I overcame these thoughts by leaning on the unwavering support of my close friends and family. Honest conversations with them helped me see my worth and reminded me that I am capable of overcoming anything. I also took their constructive criticism to heart, using it to grow stronger. Rather than letting doubt define me, I turned it into motivation to improve and persevere.
For me, the word “doubt” serves as a reminder of the numerous times I questioned myself. Living with dyslexia has been one of my greatest challenges, and it has often left me struggling with low grades and moments of self-doubt throughout high school. However, pairing the word “doubt” with “embrace” transforms it’s meaning into something truly inspiring. Over time, I’ve learned that it is crucial to embrace every experience-the good, the bad, and the ugly, Doubting yourself doesn’t just weigh you down; it can also affect those around you as well. Through my struggles, I’ve discovered the value of accepting my flaws and failures, turning them into sources of motivation. Each setback has pushed me to become stronger, smarter, and more determined. To me, there’s no better way to confront doubt than by embracing it wholeheartedly.

If I could offer advice to an athlete considering quitting their sport, I would tell them to find a solid support system they can rely on. During tough ties, I would remind them to hold on to their love for the game- it’s worth every drop of sweat and every tear shed. Most importantly, I’d tell them that they are strong, worthy and more than enough. I’d encourage them to stay determined, push through the challenges, and never give up on their passion, no matter what obstacles they face. The soccer program at any high school is extremely competitive, demanding hard work and dedication to excel. But beyond the competition, always remember to play for the love of the game and embrace the joy it brings. Challenge yourself to grow and refine your skills, but also prioritize your wellbeing. Stay positive, enjoy the process, and never lose sight of the passion that drew you to the sport in the first place.
Someone who inspires me and whom I deeply admire is my mom. She has always been a guiding light and role model through the way she has raised me, and I aspire to raise my own children with the same love and dedication someday. My mom has made countless sacrifices for me and I am grateful for everything she does. Her kind-hearted nature, unwavering support, and selflessness reflect how much she wants the best for me. I will forever cherish her love, guidance, and the countless lessons she has taught me. I wouldn’t be the strong-willed person I am today without her. There was a time I wanted to hang up my cleats after feeling defeated by a very long season but she wouldn’t let me give up that easy. She always pushes me to keep going and reminds me to stay focused on my goals. My mom is my constant support system and my biggest cheerleader.

My future goal is attend Texas State University. As a first generation college student, this is extremely special to me. I aspire to present this to my parents as a gesture of gratitude while securing a stable and promising future for myself. I plan to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of becoming a nurse and making a difference in people’s lives. After exploring various paths within the field, I’ve set my sights on becoming a NICU nurse, where I can care for newborns and create a meaningful impact during some of the most critical moments of their lives. Beyond achieving my dream career, I also hope to give back to the sport that has shaped me. I would love to coach young children in soccer, helping them discover their passion for the game that has been such an important part of my own journey. Mentoring aspiring athletes and sharing my love for soccer is something I look forward to alongside my nursing career.
